Edward Raymond Ames was born in Amesville, Ohio, May 20, 1806 and died in Baltimore, April 25, 1879. He studied at the University of Ohio. He became a Methodist, and in 1828, traveled to Illinois, where, in Lebanon, he founded the school which later became McKendree College. In 1830 Ames joined the Indiana Methodist Episcopal conference, became a traveling preacher, and rode through the South and West, and among the Indian tribes, a distance of more than 25,000 miles.
